Sanitize your microphones to rid germs and dirt Stop sharing your microphone. But if you do, cleaning your microphone is the courteous thing to do.
Cleaning your microphone is necessary to avoid spreading germs that may live on the mic or windscreen, but also when makeup or tape residue start to build up and adhere to the boom. Cleaning helps with hygiene, aesthetics and is also more comfortable for the user.
What to use and not use for cleaning
The key word here is gentle. We must be gentle because we do not want to cause damage.
- Do not use any metal objects to clean them, like a paperclip.
- Do not use water or any other sort of liquid.
- Do not dip your device into a cleaning solution.
- Do not use canned compressed air. Many may suggest this, but this is a bad idea it may push stuff inside further that you may never be able to get them out. However, you can use an air blower.
- Use a dry, clean, soft bristle brush; this can be a soft (clean) toothbrush.
- You may use a toothpick to very gently pluck out debris.
- Do not use any sharp tools.
- You may use a vacuum, again, with caution.
Get your iPhone ready before you begin
Some of this may seem a little obvious, but just in case you hadn’t thought of it, we’re gonna say it anyway. There’s a couple of things you should do before starting to clean any part of your iPhone:
- Unplug any cables
- Take it out of its case (if you have one)
- Consider removing the screen protector
- Turn it off!
Use a toothbrush or paintbrush
Opt for a super-soft bristled toothbrush if you’re wary of using a toothpick. Brush the microphone hole to sweep away any dirt that may have found its way into the microphone hole. Use a fine, watercolour paintbrush if you don’t have a soft-bristled toothbrush close at hand.
Cleaning products that utilise compressed air make for useful electronics cleaning tools. Make sure that you don’t blow the compressed air directly into the microphone hole as this can cause irreversible damage. Blast the air from around 50cm away, at an angle parallel to your phone.
